Please describe the interview / hiring process.
Stephens cares a lot about fit. They want smart people that know how to work hard but they aren't going to hire someone that they don't like or that doesn't fit in. Stephens also has a pretty southern culture (they're based in Little Rock) which flavors everything they do. Not to say that you have to be southern to work here, but from my perspective it made the process less intimidating because I felt more comfortable. (Side note: interviews are an opportunity to assess whether or not you like a company just as much as its an opportunity for them to assess you. Make sure you could see yourself spending 100 hours a week with these people because if you can't you probably shouldn't work there.)
Stephens recruited on my school's campus which made the process pretty easy but there were definitely people at the final round from non-target schools. I first interviewed on campus in early September and then was asked back to a super day at the end of the month. Stephens hires the analysts for all of their offices that weekend so they fly people from all over to their headquarters in Little Rock. They put us up in the nicest hotel in town which was right across the street from their building. We had a meet and greet in their office, a three course meal, and then they rented out a bar for after. (PSA: if you are ever at an interview and they're serving alcohol, if you're 21 it's ok to have a drink or two, but please, PLEASE, don't be the person that gets shit housed and doesn't make it to the interview.) The next morning we had 7 rounds of interviews starting at 7:30. I got a couple of technicals but they were pretty straight forward. At that point they know that everyone at the super day is smart and could do the job, so they are more focused on fit.
Ultimately, it was a great experience and I ended up receiving and taking an offer for the Dallas office. More than anything I would just urge anyone interviewing with Stephens to be yourself. Don't try to be what you think a investment banker should be like. Be sure to portray that you can get the job done and done well but have a personality while you're doing it. I hope this helps, and good luck!
