Interview
They sent an email out to the economics majors mailing list saying they were looking for students to become summer analysts. We emailed our cover letters, transcripts and resumes. Then we were notified that they were interested, and scheduled dates and times for our first round phone interviews. After that we were emailed case study documents to complete and email back, before we scheduled our second round phone interviews.
Interview Questions
"Why did you choose to attend your university?" I go to a non-target private university with a $1 billion endowment fund. I honestly didn't expect this question but apparently they really looked for students who were passionate about the school. It was the university endowment fund after all and I was being interviewed by an alumnus, so it was one of the first things they asked. However, it's possible they were just trying to strike up conversation. But of course that's also an important part of being a good job candidate., "What is the most appropriate benchmark for this mutual fund?" We had a case study to look at the performance of a mutual fund with earnings and growth data for a number of years and compare it to several benchmarks. The benchmarks were the Russell 3000, Russell 1000, S&P500, and a few others. We were given information on the composition of the mutual fund to be compared, and we were also supposed to compare the fund to its closest benchmark by calculating the alpha and beta for the fund and respective benchmark.
