Interview

I was first approached by a HR representative. He told me about the position and asked me if I was interested in applying. Then I had a 1-1 interview with the recruiting manager. He asked me to go over my resume with him, asked me a mix of behavioral and technical questions. He then set up interviews with 4 team members. Some interviews went well, others not so much. I was pretty much ghosted after that point.

Interview Questions

In general questions were not difficult but I had the impression they were looking for very particular answers. If I didn't use the right concept or wording they seemed to be disappointed. For example, I was asked how to determine whether to invest or not on a particular class of corporate bonds.

Technicals weren’t really asked outright but the conversation was clearly aimed to weed out those who didn’t know the ins and outs of FI research or what they were talking about.

There weren't many difficult questions. The majority were fit and qualitative. I had some technical questions regarding fixed-income securities, A few specific questions were: Tell me if a 30 year MBS or Treasury has a longer duration, and why. Can you explain the concept of bond convexity, how does an increase in leverage impact beta. I was also asked one brain teaser, tell me the angle of a clock at 3:15 PM, that threw me off a bit, but it's not an extremely difficult one to answer. The remainder was very casual.

Background Check

Interview

First round was 2 separate 30 minute phone interviews with 2 managers. Consisted of general background and research questions. Next round is the super day. To start the day you're given 1 hour with stacks of information on 2 companies. Then throughout the day you have ~5 1 on 1 interviews with investors at the firm and at some point during the day you have 30 minutes to pitch one of the stocks from that morning to a round table of investors and managers.

Interview Questions

-Pitch one of the stocks you had an hour to look into this morning hours later after doing several other interviews back to back.
-what additional information for the stock you pitch do you wish you had this morning?
- why did you choose this company over the other option that was given for the pitch?
-what is your view on the importance of diversity?
-what's another company you've researched other than the required research example?
- name something that is important to you that isn't on your resume?
