Interview
I was contacted by an HR consulting firm after applying online. The consultant set up a phone interview for the following day. For some reason, Whirlpool outsourced HR's typical duties for this particular position. The hiring consultant also gave me the phone interview.

The phone interview was very basic and consisted of many qualifying questions. She asked me about my prior work/internship history, current wages, salary expectations, etc. We then discussed what I knew about finance and valuation methodologies. The phone interview was concluded by asking about Excel and PowerPoint abilities. They required knowledge of VLOOKUPS, SUMPRODUCT, etc.

The in-person interview consisted of a few 1 on 1 interviews with team members. The manager's interview was a case study and included several brain teasers. This position requires a mix of financial and consulting knowledge, and the interview was a mix of your typical banking/consulting interviews.
Interview Questions
What is your experience with the VLOOKUP and SUMPRODUCT functions? Have you built financial models using these functions.

I have not used these functions in my models. I told the interviewer this. I was later told that this killed my candidacy (which seems petty). They REQUIRED knowledge of these functions.
What is Whirlpool's current corporate strategy?

The strategy is listed in the company's 10-K and on their website. It includes continued innovation, value, relationships with trade customers, expansion in emerging markets, etc.
