[need phrasing help] How to look for guarantees around work life balance in interviews
Currently crushing somewhere between 7am / 8am start and 12am - 1am finish, over a month straight. Has made me realize I don't even want to finish my associate program let alone make this a career.
I'm interviewing and I want to make it clear to other interviewers that I'm a work enthusiast (80 hours, even 90, is great, but 110-120 has been rough). I want to let them know I also am no longer willing to be "on call" (e.g., I want to be able to do things like take a hike, see my friends, or go out to dinner without being expected to respond to emails). The good news is that it's a smaller fund (currently Fund I) so less hierarchy to hide behind when making asks of Associates.
I'm thinking about telling them frankly that I am a classic overachiever but will not be working under the aforementioned conditions. I blew their minds in the interview process with my case / model performance so I think they know I really am a classic overachiever. I am OK with them accepting or rejecting my terms; if they reject them, it would not have been a good fit anyway. I just need to know how to phrase this. I am a bit brash and so saying this outright as I have outlined would not work well (I am sure they would have an allergic reaction to me making demands).
I found out about offer / no offer on Tuesday and so I am preparing. Thank you.
I'm not sure that I can offer the best phrasing help but I will say this: no matter what they tell you, make sure your terms make it into your offer letter. That will always serve as the official "record" of everything that your job entails, so make sure it's spelled out in there. The types of items you mentioned are exactly the kinds of things they can verbally promise but HR will come back to your offer letter in a dispute. I once had an offer where the manager told me that there would be no more than 20% travel but HR insisted on putting 50% in the offer letter. I turned down that offer because I wouldn't have had a basis for a complaint if they letter says 50% and they gave me 50%. You sound like a similar situation, get it in the letter.
