Investment Banking Summer Analyst

I interviewed for the Vancouver office. As a rule of thumb, firms in Vancouver prefer to hire candidates who have a connection to the city. I go to a target school within Vancouver and CIBC will host an information session at my school. In order to get the interview I spoke with a few juniors at the firm and was able to slip into the process. The first round was composed entirely of technicals with the only behavioural questions consisting of why this particular bank and the reason you want to work in Vancouver. Because the interview is an hour, I received questions across the entire spectrum, including accounting, valuation, LBO, enterprise and equity value, M&A, etc. However, I was not asked any restructuring. The questions were straight out of the guide with a few questions in the advanced portions of the guide. Nonetheless, if you review the BIWS400 questions, you will be fine. The first round is conducted by multiple juniors interviewing you simultaneously. After the first round, it's a final round (~2 hours) which consists of multiple interviews with select seniors across the office. It's primarily behavioural but expect to be asking basic questions relating to metals and mining as a majority of the deals which flow through Vancouver are related to metals and mining. The CIBC Vancouver office only takes one intern per summer but that's also the case with the other Canadian banks in Vancouver except select firms which take on two interns.
