Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I first heard about Moelis through a friend who had just accepted a full time position there. I visited early fall 2014 to network and get a better feel for the place. Very academic atmosphere is the best way I can put it. Smart as hell people. I applied through school career service app. First round was phone interview with one associate. Very Technical almost right from the start. We did valuation stuff first and then moved on to accounting questions (which actually involved me writing out three financial statements and then adjusting them based on what he said). Got through to superday which was pretty exciting. Superday was two 30 min interviews with two guys each (all associates and VPs). Interviews were even more technical in person and its no wonder they get a technical reputation. Lots of accounting questions and even some LBO modeling questions. Thought I did pretty well (though I think I took too long on one calculation question - didnt have a calculator, which would have been nice). Only negative part of the process was how long it took to hear back. I realize they didn't really care (since clearly I was not getting an offer after the second week went by) but I would have appreciated at least someone saying, "hey, you're on a waiting list" or "hey, go kick rocks." All in all I'd say it was a pretty good experience though. It was my first superday so I consider any experience there a win. Biggest advice would be you better know your stuff - they don't fuck around and they start asking hard questions quickly. Also, if you cannot back up what's on your resume you have absolutely no chance. They'll grill you endlessly on what you learned from wealth mgmt or asset mgmt so don't lie about anything. Intern class for IBD is like 20 kids so consider yourself lucky if you even have a final round there.
