An intern analyst emailed me to schedule a phone interview 3 weeks after I applied through school's career center. Interviewer was the director for energy investment banking. Asked many questions regarding valuation methods for energy companies and macroeconomic trends in the energy sector. One of the most technical interview I've ever had.
Interview Questions
Walk me through the NAV model.
What are the trends of oil price and the oil&gas industry right now?
Tell me about a recent deal in the energy sector? What is the rationale of the deal? How do you see the deal? Tell me everything you know about this deal.
What are some ratios that are unique in energy sector valuation?
List the factors you would consider when choosing companies to form a comparable company group.
Interviewer saw travelling as a hobby on my resume, so he asked where did I travel recently.

I got in thru cold-emailing and networking. First got a phone call from the director of operation and then invited for an in-person interview with 3 ppl in the team.
Interview Questions
Phone interview is just generally introducing the firm and to see which industry I am interested in. In-person interview: first with the director of operation, walk thru resume, stock pitch, how to value a mining company. Second with a VP, it is less structured and I got questions about local sports team, which book have I read, and also the standard why should we hire you, what do you know about us, what's your favorite course at school, tell me about 2 recent deals that we have done, tell me about euro economy, what do you know about mining industry, where do you think the gold price could go. Third one is with an analyst, talk about schools, detailed description about all the work experience, what's the most important in my life. mostly get to know you type of questions.

Interview
It was off-cycle recruiting and I managed to network my way through to an interview. The interview process consisted of a phone interview, which was just a basic screen and separate in person interviews with three people.
Interview Questions
If you had to pick one financial statement that you liked the most, what would it be and why? What would be the financial statement that you hate the most and why?

I only had one technical interviewer and the others were fit. The fit questions were very basic and about your background. The technical questions were not very challenging and focused mainly on accounting questions. They were mainly single step accounting questions. The interviewer will try to throw you off based on the answer that you give. Example provided in the answer section.

Interview
I applied online for the posting intially. I heard back via email approximately 4 weeks later that I had been selected for a phone interview. The phone interview lasted approximately 30 minutes, with typical behavioral questions to begin with, such as "tell me about yourself" and "can you describe a challenging situation you were in and how did you overcome it."

The questions became slightly more technical near the end, with questions such as "Please describe the current situation of the capital markets", "Why Investment Banking?", "What do you think a pitchbook consists of?" and "Why GMP Securities?".

The interviewer thanked me for my time and indicated a yes/no decision would follow in the next week, which I received by telephone.
Interview Questions
Why are you interested in Investment Banking?
What do you think a pitchbook consists of?
