Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I didn't apply for credit risk but a friend at GS submitted my resume internally to multiple departments. I know literally nothing about finance, but I am very good at networking, have a technical/interdisciplinary major, and think on my feet well. My first round phone interview with two associates was incredibly bland. They knew I had no finance background and I had a highly atypical resume for finance. I was asked:
What would you want to know about a company to determine their creditworthiness?
If I (the interviewer) wanted to borrow money from you, what would you want to know about me?
Be familiar with the GS credit risk group, your personal strengths, and credit rating agencies.

Surprisingly I was asked to come in for an interview in NYC (heard back after a week, had a few days before flying out). I had 3 back to back interviews with 2 different associates/managers (the guy who did the phone interview with me was really excited to meet me. weird). Again I was asked nothing technical. The hardest questions for me were:
Describe a how a recent event affects us (GS credit risk group).
Why credit risk rather than another area of finance? (couldn't even come up with a decent answer. basically said that I was willing to work my way up from anywhere and GS credit risk would provide good exposure to other parts of the firm).

Because I have a weird background, in the final interview I was asked:
Will robots take over the world?
No joke. I was of course puzzled -- the interviewer just wanted to hear "how I talked." I guess it's fun when you get terrible superday interviewees.
