1 on 1 Interview
Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I had a partner pulling for me. He placed me in the accelerated process. I went to the Jersey City building in November in the morning. There was one interview in the morning with 2 interviewers. They made the intial holding pen seem fairly intimidating, but the other candidates were very down to earth. The first interview went well, as I got a callback. They made me wait around in the cafeteria for several hours before they told me that, so it was still somewhat stressful. My first interviewers were pretty relaxed. The interviews took on varying tones subsequently. There were three more interviews for all those involved in the evening. I have been told each interviewer was looking for something specific. Some went better than others. They pressed me at times to see how I would react when they doubted me. They asked me a few market based questions, which was somewhat surprising given that I was interviewing for IB. My answers were pretty bad in that they were not well organized or thematic. After it was all over, I was not sure one way or the other how it had gone. I got a call the next day from the partner, telling me they thought I was a good candidate (heck I had made it to the top ten out of 30), but I wasn't quite there. Basically, he told me to be better prepared. In hindsight, they were going kind of easy on me compared to how technical they get in the regular process, but since it was my first interview for IBD, I wasn't really ready for what they threw at me. I subsequently got an offer at another BB, as he had kindly predicted I would.
