Please describe the interview / hiring process.
Got an interview for GS from a top LAC (not Amherst or Williams). Basically got the first round because of networking. 1st round interview was mainly fit with some basic technicals. Walk me through a DCF? Why do you discount cash flows? etc. Final rounds were like most banking Superdays, but at Goldman its pretty intense. The first round consisted of 1 2v1 interview and that was it. You had 30 min to get yourself into the 2nd round and that was your only shot. There were probably about 60-80 kids there for the first round and 12-15 were there for final rounds. I had my first round with a Partner and a Senior associate who mainly asked me fit questions and randomly asked me for a stock pitch. Despite not having a technical background, I think I impressed them most with my drive as well as my ability to be a human in the interview. At one point they asked me what I though my function would be and I cracked a joke about how I would probably use excel every once in a while which they liked.

Made it onto the final rounds which were tougher. 2 European guys and 1 American guy, all VPs and above. I had one interview that was completely technical as well as one question which I really wasn't prepared for( the only one all day) which was, if you couldn't be an investment banker, what would you want to be. That was my only minor stumble, but I felt as though I crushed the rest of the interviews. I was solid on the technicals and the 1-2 that I didn't know, I was able to work through with a little guidance from the interviewer. Got the call two days later with no offer though.

Basically I think I did as well as I could have, but simply wasn't one of the top 5-6 studs they took out of the group of 15 final rounders.
