I submitted my application in early spring, more than a year before the internship actually started — Goldman's timeline has crept absurdly early, and by the time most people hear the process has opened, the best groups are already deep in it. The online form itself took about two hours: resume, transcript, a division preference ranking, and a handful of short written responses about why banking and why Goldman, which I rewrote four times and had two upperclassmen tear apart. About three weeks later I got the HireVue link — an asynchronous video interview where you get a question on screen, roughly thirty seconds to think, and two minutes to record an answer with no retakes. The questions were almost entirely behavioral ("tell me about a time you worked on a team under pressure," "walk me through your resume," "why this division"), and the strangest part was talking into a webcam with no human on the other end; I practiced with a friend on Zoom for a week beforehand just to get used to it. Then silence for about five weeks, which is the part nobody warns you about — I assumed I'd been rejected and started applying elsewhere. The superday invitation came by email with about ten days' notice: four interviews, thirty minutes each, back to back, with a mix of analysts, VPs, and one MD. The junior interviewers went hardest on technicals — walk me through a DCF, how do the three statements link, what happens to free cash flow if depreciation increases by ten dollars, why would two comparable companies trade at different multiples — and the senior ones barely touched them and instead pushed on fit, deal interest, and whether I actually understood what the job looked like day to day. I'd drilled the standard technical guides until I could answer the common ones cold, which mattered less for being impressive than for freeing up attention to actually hold a conversation. The offer call came eight days later from HR, with a verbal exploding deadline of about a week, and the written package followed the next morning.
