General Interview Information
Interview Details
All else equal, to get the OCR interview you absolutely must have something on your resume that says you have a passion for the markets. Previous internships, clubs, relevant research, etc... Be able to talk about this in extraordinary detail. And DO NOT underestimate the fit interview questions (why goldman, why s&t, walk me through resume, etc...)
OCR Interviews: I was selected for an OCR interview process that encompassed two 30min interviews. The first interview was a 2 on 1 format. First interview started behavioral then moved faster to push your knowledge of the markets and relative grasp of financial ratios/metrics. Second interview was more of a conversation on the markets (e.g. where would you put your money right now, what happened in 2013, how would you invest $10mil, etc...). After about a week I was informed that I was invited to the superday which would take place in the middle of January and that HR would contact me shortly.
The Wait: Was shortly contacted by HR to set up hotel, travel plans, and how all would be paid for. Process was painless and just required reading some documents. All communication was electronic. I was given a set of directions, followed them to arrange plans, and that was it.
Super Day: Arrived in NYC (stayed at the Conrad) a day early and prepped all day. My interview was across the river at the NJ office. My time was late morning but I left way ahead of time to leave plenty of time in case something catastrophic happened - haha. At the super day they had kids for both the IB and securities division. They had this conference room on one of the floors filled up with candidates with two ladies from HR were we all had to hang out. It was kind of a weird situation. Regardless, I just sat there and waited to be called for my interview.
When it was time for my interview they lined us all up and took us to separate conference rooms where we were to wait for our interviewers to invite us in. My interview was with a guy in sales - he spent a good portion of the time introducing himself (which was nice) then the interview was strictly behavioral asking me questions about the markets and what not. In this part I didn't get a single question on the markets which was weird. IF this happens to you BRING UP THE MARKETS!! Take the initiative to show you have an understanding and interest in them. My super day was ridiculously competitive - apparently kids were pitching credit trades..?
