What did the interview consist of?
Phone Interview
Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I applied online in September and heard back in middle November. I was contacted by e-mail to set up a time to have a 30 minute phone interview. Although the e-mail stressed urgency, I did not hear back from the company until 3 days later, which ended up being the day before my interview. My interviewer was around six minutes late calling me, but was pleasant, welcoming, and enthusiastic. The interview was pretty basic, questions like walk me through your resume, a question about my relevant experience, what do you know about this position and company, what role do you normally take in a group, tell me about a time when you had to overcome a struggle in a group, what's your worst quality, time management, etc. I was very confident throughout the whole interview and was pleased with my responses; the interviewer seemed interested as well. When asked for any questions at the end, I brought up regulations in the industry and how it impacts the department on a day-to-day basis, and the interviewer was helpful in answering it. The interviewer was friendly, warm, and receptive; ultimately, he gave me no concern. I was certain I had done a great job and was proud of myself. I did not hear back from GS until three and a half weeks later. I was told that (among some positive praise ), I was "underprepared" and "lacked knowledge". There were also some concerns if this was the right department for me. While I can take criticism, I was rather taken aback by these comments. They did not give me one curveball question, and the interviewer seemed very interested and impressed. I had prepared diligently, as this was my "dream job". Once I hung up the phone, I was beaming with pride. I am from a non-target school, so I was extremely excited just to get an interview! Overall, I would say the first round phone interview is easy and very basic, but they do have a very specific person they are looking for. I guess I'm just not it. On to the next one!
