Research Analyst

1. Initial phone screen - tell me about yourself, why finance, why Hall Capital (show some kind of research about the firm and understanding of what we do), why asset allocation v. direct investing (important one), tell me about your experience at XYZ internship, talk about a market trend you find interesting; be sure to have some good questions at the end since 10 minutes is left at the end for questions
2. Second round phone screen - similar to first one but more in depth; interviewer will target areas not covered in initial phone screen or go deeper in some areas (ie if Fed will raise interest rates, how would you position your portfolio as a PM?); if candidate seemed weak in certain areas like teamwork, will ask more pressing questions there
3. Final round in SF office - will meet most of the research team, including managing directors, principals, VPs, and associates. Will always be 2 interviewers at a time. Candidate will have 40 minutes for a case study about a prospective investment manager that they will then lead a discussion about for 20 minutes. Ultimate question is "would you invest?" but the thought process and logic behind it is more important than the answer. What do you choose to analyze about the fund?
