Interview
The interview was fairly easy and not technical in any sense. The first one was a one-on-one with the person who needed a research intern. Most of the questions asked if I knew what the company's process was and how my prior experience would aid me to help in that process. However, the interviewer did most of the talking for the allotted time. The second was a two-on-one interview, one of them being the recruiter. This interview dove deeper into my previous work experiences, as they asked about recent projects in school I had been working on. Overall, it was an easy interview and the hiring process was laid-back.

Overall, it was an easy interview and the hiring process was laid-back. None of the questions asked were difficult, but I did have a hard time understanding what exactly the company did until I started working there. Their website only had so much information, so I ended up learning a good amount in the interview. The last unexpected question was: what is the project or work you have done in school that you are the most proud of?

To be honest, having very unmotivated interviewers didn't help at all. It was like, they were done with their day - and since I wasn't an Business/Econ major, they weren't able to comprehend why I wanted to be in Finance and sorta put me down for it. All three of them were Business or Econ majors.
Interview Questions
If you owned a dress company, what other companies would you acquire and why?
If you want to be in investment banking, then why are you here? We don't work with numbers.
What is EBITDA? Talk about the three financial statements.
How will your background be of any use in finance?
Are you caught up in news in the economics/finance world?
What have you done that can prove that you can handle long days and hours?
What have you done that proves that you are a fast learner?
Since you are busy twice a week, what really separates you from other candidates that work full-time?

Interview
I applied to Harvey and Company because it was a buy-side M&A advisory firm that was located close enough to home that I was willing to work there over break. The interview process was 1 phone screen with the recruiter and went very smoothly. It was very behavioral based and I got along well with him to get the offer.
Interview Questions
What is your favorite class and how would it help you with your work here? I never thought that Harvey and Company or the recruiter would care about my class and that was one of the behavioral questions I never considered preparing for and was caught off guard, especially with its more traditional finance focus of a business model. However, the recruiter was young and might have been actually interested in what a college student's favorite class was. It ended up being an interesting conversation.

The first step was a call from the HR/hiring manager. Asked standard behavioral questions and described the role I was applying for. After about a week, I had an interview in the office. Consisted of 3 back-to-back interviews (1-on-1).
Interview Questions
1. What do you think your responsibilities are going to be?
2. How would you go about extracting information out of private businesses? (This one was a little weird because I couldn't figure out what they were looking for)
3. Are you fine with working 8 hours a day doing repetitive, boring work? (Great way to sell the firm)
4. What's the difference between buy-side and sell-side advisory?
5. What's an add-on (bolt-on) acquisition?
6. What is a private equity firm?
7. What do we do here at Harvey?

The process was pretty straightforward and super easy. It consisted of 1 phone interview that was almost entirely informational. I was then called in to the office to interview with 3 different associates. Because the role is mostly qualitative it seemed like they were mostly concerned with culture and fit, there were very little technical questions. I was called back into the office a few days later to meet with the director of the team I would be assigned to.

Almost no technical questions, super easy interview.
Interview Questions
Why do you want to be at this firm? Usually an easy question to answer, but because of the unique nature of this firm I found myself struggling to come up with a good reason why I wanted to be there. They are looking for people who are content to sit at a desk and do company/market research for 8-9 hours a day with very little analysis regarding the financials of the company. Like I said, the interview was very behavioral with almost no technical questions. This is a super niche firm and are looking for a very specific type of employee.

Applied online and got 30-min phone screen with an associate (to be your direct supervisor) which included big picture topics like what PE was, M&A cycles and M&A examples I knew of. Got invited to an in-person interview on the spot for the following week.
Interview Questions
None really, but just dug through one specific M&A transaction and explained key components such as strategy, equity, brand transitions, etc
