Please describe the interview / hiring process.
The first stage was a telephone itnerview with HR. Pretty straighforward with a lot of competency-based questions and some motivational questions about why HSBC, why trading etc. The hardest question was "What would the wolrd look like in 2050?".
I passed that stage and was invited to the assessment centre. The process was pretty quick, everything was done within a month.
The assessment centre was a day long. There were in total 4 interviews and a numercial test (harder thna online).3 of those were with more senior people and 1 was with HR. One interview was techniqual with questions on the market. Mine was mostly on equities and I had to pitch a stock of my choice. I heard other people had more fixed income related interviews, asking about bonds etc. There were also some general questions on the current economic environment.
The other interview was more behavioural, more general. They would put you under presusure to see how you react, asking very open questions and trying to challenge you in everything you say. Here my advice would be to stay calm and try to answer the questions the best of your ability, supporting whatever you say. For instance, one of the questions I got was "When and how do you think banking started?".
The 3rd interview was a presentation with follow-up questions. We were given a report to study for 30 minutes and make a presentation to present to potential clients. The report was called "The Southern Silk Road" which can be found on HSBC's website. After the presentation, the interviewer asked a lot of follow up questions specifically on the presentation.
The last interview was very similar to the phone interview: motivational + competency-based.
Everyone was very nice throughout the whole day. Pretty friendly culture.
