Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I reached out to a senior financial analyst using LinkedIn. After being referred to his former group, I was contacted by his replacement for an initial phone interview (I am located in another state.) The interview consisted of mostly behavioral questions, and a few basic accounting ones, e.g. what the main line items are in the financial statements. A few days later, I was contacted by his colleague (who, if given the offer, would be my boss) for another phone interview - this time, shorter. This talk lasted about half an hour, and consisted only of behavioral questions - it was meant to clear up any questions this person had after reading through the notes from the previous interview. Mainly consisted of talking in detail about some of the things mentioned in my resume. At the end of the interview, I was told that I would hear back within the next couple of days about their decision. After about four days, I was contacted by a manager from another operating company for a one-hour phone interview. Apparently, they had all been discussing recruiting together, and wanted to see where I would possibly fit in best. As a note, I am an accounting major, and was consistently asked about my interest in finance. I used the questions toward the end of each interview to really express my interest by focusing on aspects more relevant to finance than accounting. The third interview lasted about twenty minutes plus another fifteen for my questions. There were no "give me an example" questions, just "run me through your resume." The rest were "why" questions: why J&J, why major in accounting, why corporate finance vs. public accounting. Also, a technical question regarding the financial statements. I was then told that there were actually three co-op positions which they were currently hiring for.
The interesting thing is, I wasn't asked regular "fluff" questions at all throughout these talks - nothing about clubs, nothing about extra curriculars. They really just wanted to get to know me, and understand why I was interested in the field in general. As a general tip, I would really try to emphasize how your values are aligned with those which are promoted by the company's credo. Overall, it was pretty easy-going.
