Equity Research Intern
General Interview Information
Interview Details
As it was for an Australian winter internship position, the following rounds were shorter and faster than for summer (end of year) internships.
First communication from JPM was 2 days after the deadline for a telephone interview in the morning asking me to walk through my CV, why JPM and to discuss something interesting and relevant that I'd heard of in the news recently.
By the afternoon, HR booked me in for final round of 2 panel interviews (of 2 people) for 2 business days later (whole process was over within a week and a half). Final round held at JPM main office in Sydney CBD (castlereagh street). First panel interview about fit/behavioural questions, second slightly technical/behavioural as well. Very light on technicals since it was for winter internship, was more macro-economic focused to see if you were interested in financial markets as a whole.
Tips:
- Ask questions. Answers you get from earlier interview rounds you can use to your advantage for later rounds. Analyst on phone was very open and honest, even explaining that he felt the other BBs were as good as JPM.
- Both panel interviews asked me "Why ER", stupidly enough this was the question that in hindsight that I probably performed the least well in. The fact that they both ask it should demonstrate how important it is to get this one right.
- Be prepared to support any answers you give or be prepared for flow-on discussions. Try to relax, they like to have a casual-style discussion and will ask follow up questions on something you are talking about. e.g. "And why do you think that's the case?" or "Do you think that will change any time soon?"
