Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I had my first round on campus at my university. It was a one-on-one interview, and was entirely fit-based (why sales/trading, etc). My interviewer was a 3rd year analyst on a trading desk who was very personable, and the interview lasted about 30 minutes. The second (final) round was a pseudo-superday format at the offices in New York, but only involved 3 separate interviewers. Oddly, this was also very "softball" and there didn't seem to be a lot of coordination among interviewers in terms of question type and difficulty. 2 of the interviewers focused on the "why sales/trading" and asked me a few questions about current events. The 3rd interviewer asked about the financial crisis, where I saw myself in 5 years, and a few simple questions about how different financial instruments work. The uniting theme was that all interviewers seemed to want a cohesive story about what I wanted to do, with some specificity--I pitched myself as a sales guy (I actually ended up trading after I was hired, by choice) and expressed some vague inclination towards fixed income and derivatives. I think the best approach in the process is to express a focus on a particular type of role, but to be vague enough that you have plausible deniability if a particular interviewer feels strongly about a different path.
