S& vs. Kearney vs. ZS vs. EY-P

Context:

  • Kearney (Strategic Ops), S& (Industrials), EYP (Generalist) in Boston; ZS (Decision Analytics) in Evanston
  • Mechanical Engineering Major Graduating Early to explore consulting full time

Interested in understanding how each of these firms rates in the following categories for FT:

  • Prestige and Brand if I want to pursue MBB later
  • Culture
  • Hours
  • Diversity of Work
  • Quant Tilt
  • Exit Opportunities and what do they look like

Also if anyone has any specific insights about the office work tilt.

S&, K, EYP would all set you up equally well for exit opportunities (inc. MBB) in the future.

Consider whether you want to focus on CDDs (EYP), cost-cutting / operational strategy (K), or broad exposure to a range of projects but in one vertical (S&).

Pay-wise, S& probably is the highest (at least at post MBA level, particularly given recent payscale changes at EYP) but the differences should not be meaningful enough to dictate your decision.

Interestingly, S& and EYP are growing revenues, whereas K has stagnated in the US/EMEA. S& probably has the best momentum going forward as a firm (particularly given EYP’s recent structural changes) but if you are staying for only a couple years, this probably does not matter.

Think about the type of work you want to be doing. At S& and ZS (in pharma) you'd be specialized to one industry vertical, so you have to decide if you're ready to decide on that now. On the other hand, if you care more about the function instead of the industry, EY-P seems to be known now as mostly doing CDD, S& will probably be more typical growth strategy. At ZS your role will be more quantitative and in analytics, as you're aligned to the analytics track. At K the role is more operational and less exposure to "strategy." All of these firms are known brands by m7 and MBB and excel in their distinct niches. Prioritize where you will enjoy the work and you will do well. That's what drives good exits or experience or whatever.
