Junior Analyst Watch Thought?
Hi all. Debating on a first entry level luxury watch for graduation. I've heard mixed thoughts ranging from you can't wear something too nice to the office as a junior analyst, to, people don't really care because they could afford it if they wanted to. Is it unacceptable to wear a nice watch to the office? Depends on the place? Or other. I've strayed away from used Rolex's because I don't want to give off a silver spoon kid impression. Would a Tudor Blackbay or Omega Seamaster be more acceptable? I'm actually into watches and am not looking to get something just as a status symbol, but I don't want to have it giving off any bad impressions etc. Likely working in AM or IB at a NYC middle market bank if it makes any difference.
Almost everyone won’t care, like everything else there is also a risk someone judges you for it, but people who judge on that would also judge you based on clothing, where you live, your wallet, a million different things. It isn’t worth to worry about it, if you have worked hard and can afford it and want to use your money that way go ahead. Most people won’t notice it at all and watch fans will probably just talk with you about it if they do notice.
Of the two brands you mention I’m a bigger fan of omega. I personally think pre owned with watches, from a reputable dealer, is the way to go. Depending on your budget you can start finding some very solid pieces at a nice discount used.
I wouldn’t worry about it, you are going to a major financial hub in a high paying industry. I’ve been in the industry for long time and I love watches, and as a senior person I would appreciate a watch more than think someone is spoiled. At the end of the day your work is what speaks for itself. As I said before, people who don’t know watches won’t be able to tell the difference between omega and fossil (I’m cartooning it, but the price difference won’t register). Just don’t get a diamond encrusted watch.
If you want watch recommendations at a certain price point feel free to ask (or pm me).
At that budget it is tough, but my top recommendation would probably be a pre-owned Nomos Glashutte. You can find them right at the top of your budget through you reputable dealer and probably get a bit of a discount (especially right now).
They have high quality watches and in house movements, their prices have jumped a bit recently but should be fine. Also I am a fan of the simplistic design and think it pairs well with casual and dressed up environments, but others might not be a fan of the design.
They are less recognizable than tag, but I think a comparison is unfair from a quality perspective as Nomos is a better product. It just depends if you want “brand recognition”.
I tried finding some omegas or IWC at that price but a bit tough.
