Some reading that I'd recommend:
Paul Marshall - 01⁄2 Lessons from Experience: Perspectives on Fund Management: The author founded / is CIO of Marshall Wace which is probably the industry leader in Europe right now. It is short (128 pages), punchy and really focuses on the key issues in the industry.
Scott Fearon - Dead Companies Walking / Richard Sauer - Selling America Short: Trying to figure out how the short side works / what a crappy company looks like is pretty important. You could even read Financial Shenanigans by Schillit which really goes into weeds on forensic account.
