Long short spread
Title basically says it all. What does long short spread actually mean in the context of equity hedge funds? I've heard the term referenced here and there and googled it but didnt find anything. So would love to know

It just means the stocks you long go up / more / down less than the stocks you short. Not necessarily that longs return positive and shorts return negative but that the relative difference in performance between them is wide. Unfortunately lot of HF will market this and claim they generate alpha when most of that is cross-sector factor spread or beta spread.
