Australian SA in London

For context, I have secured a SA BB gig for London (fingers crossed its going ahead) and I am looking for advice on accomodation!

I don't know London well, the office is central and I am wondering where is best for Interns to stay? In terms of price/location and basically what will be best for my overall experience in London. Additionally, how do most people find accomodation for SA, as obviously coming from Aus I won't be able to check places out in person.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Firstly, congrats on the offer! I would say the key areas to look at are Aldgate, Shoreditch & London Bridge. all very close to central and generally pretty well connected with tubes and buses. In terms of how to go about finding these, use Rightmove, Zoopla and SpareRoom. Each room will have a map on these websites. use google maps to figure out your commute time.

I applied online and luckily they allowed me to complete the AC at their offices in Melbourne over a video call! I am finishing my degree in June, so timeline works out for interning in London summer. Fingers crossed that everything goes to plan and I'll be able to start up FT in 2021. Obviously lots of things have to go right before that though..

do you mind giving us an idea of what your profile is like? I assume you're g08 comm/law?

Great and these are typically available for 3 months over the summer and how much would a room like that go for? Also, how would I go about finding availabilities, would it likely be on SpareRoom?

At liberty court you can specify how long you need it for over summer (10 weeks for an internship). I think they are around £250 pw and you can book through their website.

PM me if you're interested in flatsharing! Me and another from WSO are thinking of getting a place which would be in central as well.

Another question: Do banks typically allow people offered FT to start earlier? For example just given my current situation I would prefer to start in January 2021 instead of July if offered. This is obviously assuming I get an offer, which fingers crossed will be guaranteed even before starting!

Think many banks have multiple intakes, so probably (one in July, and one in February)

I would look at accommodation at London University Accommodation (like LSE) or third party accommodation for students (like IQ). For my SA last year I took over the remaining 3 months of a lease at IQ City on Bastwick street which I found on Spareroom. Good location and could negotiate on price as I could see there were a handful of them available in the building.

If its virtual do you have to be in London?

Thanks, I think I'll definitely suss those options when my start date is confirmed and closer to the time. My belief is that I'll have to come to London even if its virtual, given the time difference with Aus is awful, I'm waiting to see how my Visa process goes though as the Visa offices are currently shut here..

Are you based in London? I'm stuck in Aus with an FT starting after the summer and trying to figure out how this international travel ban works.

(Edit) Sorry, misread: guess you're based in Australia as well. Any insight on whether we'll actually be allowed to leave given that the ban may go on into 2021?

Yeah I'm honestly not sure what is going to happen. I'm also worried about getting my Visa sorted as well given the Visa offices are closed. When is your start date meant to be?

I think that if you have your Visa sorted you can apply for an exemption to be allowed to travel and then be approved to go to the UK. I'm just waiting to get an update from my BB to see what the go is because I don't particularly want to cop working on UK time zone living in Aus.

I'm supposed to be starting in September but not sure if there will be any changes. Yeah, I know about the exemption system but have no idea how it will work in practice. My contract is for at least a year so hopefully that'll be just cause for leaving the country. Otherwise I'd be here claiming unemployment benefits...

I think you're in a better situation than I am though, since at least you get to work online if all else fails. Hopefully you do sort things out and get to London though!

You guys aren't alone. I along with a bunch of other mates from college (an ivy) are back in Sydney riding out this pandemic but we have summers in NYC (mostly virtual now). But we'd still need to be back in the states to do our programs for SSN purposes. We're also looking at applying for exemptions. Hopefully Scomo relaxes the outgoing travel ban a bit.

In the same position as you and many other people on this thread (in Aus but interning in US/Europe). why do you have to be back in the US to intern for SSN purposes?

Hey mate, in the exact same position as you. Can I please PM you to discuss - cheers.

Not in same situation but from speaking to HR 1 to 1 and on various zoom calls they've held, my BB have said if you're in a different timezone/visas are problematic, they'll do a combination of you join the local team instead for work and join up for events and meeting members of team in the international region.

I think timezone issue is minor: you're going to be working most of the day anyway and it's only 10 weeks (or 5 weeks now?). Just adjust to London time a week before internship starts.

If the bank is willing to let you go into the local office/do work there, I'd say that shows they're pretty flexible and are serious about keeping their talent. I think regardless of whether that's ideal, it's still a good sign.
