Burning Out

Hey guys, I'm a sophomore at HYP recruiting for SA 2025. I applied to maybe 25-30 banks, mostly during early February. Now, of course, I don't expect to get an interview at every bank (I did not network at ~1/2 of them, mostly MMs), but I have gotten literally zero first rounds. I networked pretty extensively at a few BBs and then a bit more mildly at a few MMs and one EB, but it seems like it's just not going to happen for me. I study econ and have a 3.9+ GPA with lots of extracurriculars, including volunteering and leadership. I think the thing holding me back is my total lack of finance experience--no previous internships or clubs (got rejected from school clubs). I do have work experience in unrelated fields though. I get that a lot of the competition have several finance internships under their belt or whatever, but I thought I made a pretty compelling case for myself in my networking calls, which almost always went quite well in my opinion. Anyone else in this boat? Anyone have advice to keep going?

Ah, the classic tale of the high-achiever hitting a snag on the road to Wall Street. First off, let's acknowledge that you're doing a lot right: HYP institution, stellar GPA, and a proactive approach to networking. These are all feathers in your cap, my friend. However, the world of finance, especially the high-octane realms of investment banking, is notoriously competitive. It's a jungle out there, and even the brightest bananas sometimes don't get picked on the first go-around.

Now, onto the crux of your situation – the lack of finance experience. It's true, the field you're aiming to break into often values direct experience highly. But don't let this deter you. Here are some actionable steps and advice based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Diversify Your Approach: While BBs, MMs, and EBs are the dream, don't overlook boutique firms. They can offer invaluable hands-on experience, often with more responsibility early on. Plus, a successful stint at a boutique can be a compelling story for your next round of applications.

  2. Leverage Unrelated Experience: You mentioned having work experience in unrelated fields. That's not a minus; it's a plus if framed correctly. Highlight transferable skills like leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. These are gold in any field, especially in high-pressure environments like banking.

  3. Double Down on Networking: It sounds like you've made some good connections already. Keep those relationships warm. Follow up with a thank you note, share an interesting article related to a discussion you had, or ask insightful questions. Networking is not just about landing a job; it's about building relationships that can offer advice, mentorship, and opportunities down the line.

  4. Consider Alternative Paths: Sometimes, the direct route to your destination is blocked, and that's okay. Look into related fields like asset management, equity research, or even fintech startups. These experiences can broaden your skill set and make your profile more attractive for IB roles in the future.

  5. Stay Positive and Persistent: The finance world respects grit and resilience. Use this time to reflect on what you can improve and how you can add value to your desired field. Remember, many successful professionals faced setbacks early in their careers. What set them apart was their refusal to give up.

  6. Educate Yourself: While you're in this phase, deepen your understanding of finance. WSO has a plethora of resources, from technical guides to interview prep materials. Being well-versed in financial modeling, valuation techniques, and current market trends can give you an edge in interviews and networking conversations.

In the grand scheme of things, you're just at the beginning of your journey. Keep learning, keep striving, and remember, every no brings you closer to a yes. Keep swinging, champ!
