Corporate Banking to DCM, how possible?

Hi all,

Currently in corporate banking at a Big 5 here in Canada. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how feasible it is to transition to DCM internally or at another bank. Given current market conditions and all else, how possible or likely could this transition be? I’ve read before that once you are an associate, the likelihood of this happening increases, but you would likely lateral in as an analyst, not associate. Would love for anyone to confirm or provide some insight. Thanks!

Hello,All depends on what you have achieved in Corporate Banking and the % of activity flow between Lending and Capital Markets. To put it briefly, it is achievable and has been done - seen on several occasions - and mostly within same bank. The best is to demonstrate enough experience in banking products and experience in coverage with regular DCM issuers, and move to cover within the bank from a DCM product perspective.Moving between banks - and before ED level - would be much harder except as you said, if it is at the analyst level where this is completely achievable. I understand you are an intern still from the name of the posting. Many DCM platforms appreciate Corporate Banking experience prior as generally it shows a candidate knows what a bridge, rcf, etc are. This is not a transition like a VP CB would consider going to DCM. Here the bridge should be relatively easy.

Hope this helps.

Thought the pay and hours are similar between DCM and corporate banking. What’s the difference?
