In terms of competition, there are less spots available, however, less people apply as well. In recent years, I would say competition has increased drastically as US-based firms have been less open to hiring Canadians and international students.

EVR, greenhill, lazard consistently hire summer analysts. 100% harder to land as they only hire 1-2 spots.
Even before the TN issue, it was tougher to land a spot as compared to the US. Just significantly less turnover so less hiring needs on an ongoing basis.
