Is it worth it getting a referral for JPM and GS in London?

With upcoming summer applications, I'm in a position to obtain a referral (possibly multiple if I make an effort) through networking at JPM and GS; however, I'm aware that it's not as effective in the UK. Will it help at all? Can it hinder my application? I've heard from seniors that it can somehow worsen your application at JPM. Should also share that a GS MD said it won't make a difference at all but he's happy to refer

I met one of the MDs at the gym, the other at a neighbourhood event. From there, I built the connection over the past few months and was put in touch with others

Still nepo lol if you can afford to attend the same gyms as a GS MD. Doubt he's going to puregym
