Useless Associates - Age vs Performance?

Have you guys ever had analysts that were better than associates, and getting equal pay as associates aside from the title?

Analyst here, and get equal pay as associates but not the title. Do you think should lateral or wait it out?

Pretty common. You definitely have some superstar analysts and some useless ASOs (especially the handful of MBA ASOs who figure out quickly this is not for them, but are stuck because of their student loans). This is just part of working in a corporate job, you are rated/paid within your title and you have to do a certain minimum number of years regardless of how good you are.

If you are not up for associate promote (2 years) no bank is going to give you an early promotion with a lateral. Actually, many banks make analysts do a third year when they lateral.

Curious as well haha, might be an EMEA thing? I’m in a pretty big sector team in London, and as far as I know, the A2A happens once you’re done with your third year (eg 2021-2024)
