Analyst in IB -> Analyst in PE?

I'm currently a first-year analyst at an EB in SF and have always wanted to make the move to a top tier investing firm (SLP/Vista/KKR/BX) etc.

Given my firm's mediocre exits (mostly MM/UMM PE or corp dev) in the last few years, I am considering two plans of action and wanted some insight on the pros and cons of each.

1) Lateral to a better bank (GS/MS/Q) and recruit from there as a second/third-year analyst for associate roles

2) Start seeking out PE analyst programs that may be open to taking on a lateral hire

I know I would be giving up pay and a year of hard work/career progression, but if the firm has a history of A2A promotes, I think it will put me in a better position for B-School or a future career in PE.

Happy to hear any and all comments as I continue to think about these options.
