A Little But Not Enough
I need some help putting my situation into perspective. I've had a short but successful career in politics working first for the UN and then as a chief of staff to a high profile politician. It was never intended to be a long term career so I recently got out.
A family friend happened to be selling their company and asked if I wanted to get involved - yes please. So I've spent the last six months handling the acquisition process from the sell side to a NYSE listed tech company.
Now the deal's over I'm in charge of the integration management between the companies but given how much I enjoyed working on the deal, I'm looking at how or if I can get into doing M&A full time. My current job also runs out in a few months.
I was given a lot of exposure and responsibility in the deal process but apart from this my background in finance is zero (I majored in political science). I'm too old for grad schemes and all the IB's are after several years top flight experience. I know an MBA would be good right about know but it's financially out of the question for 2-3 years.
I'm realsitic about my prospects. I'm not addicted to bulge bracket or anything like that, just want to work in or on the fringes of M&A.
Any advice?
Try talking to the advisers on either side of that deal.
Yeah, I tried to angle my way into the in-house M&A setup too but it was a non-starter. Their advice was do the CPA, but the only good way I see of doing that is through a Big 4 firm grad scheme. I've already applied for one and got nowhere, HR said they wanted a graduate or recent grad.
Your use of the word scheme in place of education is interesting. Not bad. Just intriguing.
