Analyst farewell gifts ideas

any suggestions? Most people seem to do wine/chocolate/ties

Edit: to clarify, second years in our group who are leaving have traditionally bought gifts for the people they've worked with. I guess this is not as common of a practice as I had imagined.

Leather stuff, pens etc

get bottles of wine. i would just leave it on their desk with a small post-it goodbye note attached. when my girlfriend left her firm, she attached to each bottle a much nicer looking personal message / small letter. it's a very nice way to step out. you've worked hard with these people and you want to keep a good relationship with them.

This might seem a little lame, but at our bank, what we usually do is buy a small hardcover "novelty book" (preferably one that is tailored to the recipient's personality or interests) and circulate it around to all the analysts in the class and associates/VPs/MDs that the recipient has worked together with. Each person will pick a page inside the book and write their own personal message.

As an example, a person who was leaving our bank liked to drink beer, so we bought him a novelty book that was titled something like "Famous Beers Around the World." Each page had a photograph of the beer in question, a brief description and then plenty of white space for someone to write in their individual message.

We ended up going a little overboard, asking assistants, WP/graphics people and even security guards (who the guy would joke around with in the mornings) to sign the book, but all in all, we had around 50 personalized messages. Some people who barely knew the guy wrote short messages like "Hey XXXX, good luck in all your future endeavors. Signed, YYYY" Others who were close to the guy would write paragraph after paragraph. Some of the best messages were words of wisdom from MDs and other senior bankers.

In addition to the farewell book, each of us would also pitch in a few dollars and buy the person going away a nice bottle of champagne.

Sounds pretty classy to me.
