Apartments in NYC: Manhattan vs Brooklyn
- Just recently moved to NY
- Living in Queens at my pal's apt for now
- Been looking to find an apt in either Manhattan or Brooklyn.
- Budget: $2000 for me and my roommate (so 1000 each)
Now regarding Brooklyn, do any of yall know which areas are actually feasible to live in with such budget and favorably a shorter commute? I have never lived in Brooklyn and literally don't know jack shit about it.
I realized with $2000 is unreal to find an apt in Manhattan, but if any of you guys know smth that I don't, I would appreciate it so much.

What did you use in your search?
Do you care about the safety of the neighborhood and the condition of your apartment? 2k is kinda tough in brooklyn, at that budget I think a better option would be to flex a larger 1bed in sunnyside (25 min commute to grand central via the 7).
I certainly do, more so on the safety than conditions of an apt. I'd rather have a 20 min commute on a subway and live in a tiny place than live an hour away and have a huge apt if that makes sense.

Also, where do you work? That will make your commute answers a little bit easier for us. A commute to midtown from Brooklyn will be longer than it would be than it would be coming from Queens. But if you work downtown then Brooklyn will be faster.
I work in midtown broadway/46th.
I've just been told to look at apts in upper manhattan around 100th - 150th street... I don't think I have even been there haha. Thoughts?
Sunnyside Queens you can get to your work door to door in under 25 minutes. You just take the 7 to grand central and then walk the rest of the way. If you're into fitness, you could bike there even faster.
Sunnyside is an extremely safe area and you can get a decent size 2 bdr for 2k a month. Some 2bdr's in my building go for 1900. It's also becoming a bit "trendier" with new restaurants and bars moving in, but also at the same time, very quiet and family friendly.

Yup, Sunnyside used to be very family oriented (still kinda is but getting better) but its safe and close to midtown. I have a few friends living there and they like it, especially for the price. You can find some older buildings with a lot of space, though from what i've seen, the ones that right off the 7 line are edging closer to 1700+ for a large 1 bed. I personally think its better than living in the 100s, but then some people like the cachet of living in manhattan.
Check out Sunset Park or BayRidge in Brooklyn. Tons of Wall Streeters out here.

Why not just go to Jersey and save yourself the 4% tax, sounds like you need it if you can only afford $1k rent a month
If you can you guys should really up your budget and flex somewhere in the UES. You could definitely do that on 2800-3k. Or get another couple people and flex a 2 or 3 bedroom. I wouldn't live in the places you can get a flexable 1 or 2 bedroom for 2k. Hoboken isn't even really feasible on that.

One of the problems with Sunnyside is that the trains are absolutely atrocious in the morning. I kid you not, it is very possible to see three express trains pass you in the morning before a local train stops, only it'll be filled to the brim with people and good luck getting on. 25 minutes to Grand Central is very generous when you average in all the days that it takes you 40.
