Applying for sophomore programs as a junior?

Hi. I know the title sounds weird but please let me explain. Even though I am a rising junior right now, but my expected graduation date would be May 2024 since I have to take a gap year starting from junior spring due to family reasons. That leaves me wondering if I can apply for sophomore program for 2022 summer and junior program for 2023 summer. Technically I could because my graduation date would be 2024 but my academic standing would be higher than normal candidates. Just wondering if anyone had done it before or heard of it, and if so, do I need to contact with the recruiter to explain my situation or just apply as a normal candidate? Much appreciated for suggestions.
