I'm doing some career research and am having trouble finding much information of trading. I know quite a bit about ibanking but haven't been able to find the same amount of info for trading. Perhaps somebody knows of a good resource or two that I could read to get the basics down?
Some of the questions I have:
-Where do traders work? Investment banks? Specific-trading firms? Some company names would be nice also.
-What's the typical career path? Are there summer internship programs? What's the recruiting process like?
-What are the main differences in investment banking and trading in terms of recruiting?
I understand what a trader does, I'm just having trouble figuring out some of the details of where and who they work for.

it's obvious from the questions you listed that you have no idea what a trader does. "trading stocks" is not an appropriate answer. however, if you want to learn, there is an abundance of information on several forums.
also, like someone else said, the Vault Guide to S&T covers all your questions.
Please take some time to explore the traders forum. I cant believe im saying this but.... VAULT GUIDE since you seem completely out of the loop.

Traders simply trade commodities, trying to turn a profit. That's my understanding anyway. Of course there are more complexities but their basic function is to make money by trading commodities, equity, bonds, and everything in between.
What I don't understand is the career path of a trader and what firms hire these people. I'm from Canada so the BB firms don't have a strong presence here and I can't find anything on trading from IBs in Canada like RBCCM. Perhaps I should have been more specific and mentioned I am looking for where traders work in Canada.
