College Minor

Hey all,

So I am a student at the University of Michigan, majoring in mathematics with a concentration in finance in the College of Liberal Arts. I hope to get into trading or work at a large, quant hedge fund. My mother is really on my ass to get a business minor, as she says it would really help, and it would be a way to get the Ross School of Business on my CV. I personally believe that it would hurt my GPA because of class overload, and the things I would learn would be very limited. Would getting this business minor help at all in terms of getting a job in trading, at a hedge fund, or getting into a top MBA program down the road?

Regards!

Whoa there tiger. Sure it will help, but you're not going to get into a hedge fund because they liked your minor. Its just icing on the cake and can contribute to the skillset in the path you choose.

It shouldn't be that much extra work. What year are you?

I just transferred, so I am a Junior, but I have 12 classes left to complete my major, but the business minor would tack on another 5 on top of that.

You have 3 semesters left so that would be 5/6/6 classes per semester - thats not that bad?

This should be a decision you make, not your mother. Do what you think is best, but, IMO, a minor will not matter much. Do well in the classes you're currently in and do plenty of personal studying on the industry.
