Desperately in Need of Financial Career Advice

Hello everyone! I have periodically sifted through WSO over the last few years as I have always been interested in Investment Banking and high-level finance, but I am finally at the age where it is time to figure out my career path.

I go to a poor college in the US (still Top-100 Business program, but nothing special) and am double-majoring in Accounting and Finance. I just began my senior year, and have above a 3.95 cumulative GPA, but the best job opportunities in finance upon graduation from my school seem to be in F500 corporate finance, which I am not entirely interested in.

My business mentor, and a close family friend, is a SMD in M&A at a BB in Europe, and he inspired me to pursue a career in Investment Banking, but I know it is not possible coming from the school I'm at. I have interned at a Big-4 in Audit, but found the job duties extremely simple and boring, so declined my full-time offer. I attempted to interview into that same firm's TAS sector, but was denied after first-round interviews (even though the interview was a 30-minute get to know each other session). I don't know if there was ever a job opening as I never found the position online, but think they possibly had me interview because I denied my audit offer and asked for an interview in TAS.

I played Division 1 football at my college for a couple of years, and am very motivated to work a tough job with grueling hours while I'm young. I don't like the sound of working 100-hour weeks for multiple years of my life, but would be willing to do it if the opportunity arose. I also have an opportunity to play my final year of football eligibility at a Top-MBA program in the US (think Northwestern, Penn, Cal, etc.) but am not sure what an MBA would do for me considering I have no work experience.

I have recently began looking into Asset Management, and am very interested in that field, but don't really know what steps I need to take now in order to get there. I guess my question is, I am super confused on the possible career paths that I could take, and am refusing to be like everyone else from my college and going into F500 finance, so what possibilities do you think are reasonable for me right now? Thank you in advance, any feedback or advice is really helpful.

It does not sound like your committed to choosing banking, which is okay. However an opportunity wont just "arise" from nothing. You have a PERSONAL connection to an MD at a large bank. You need to talk to him if your interested in banking. You also played D1 football and maintained a solid GPA.

Stop discounting your own abilities and connections. In other words, you have the means to land an interview in any career paths mentioned. Begin building a serious network with the intention of landing interviews (informational) ASAP. Time is limited friend, work hard and fast. Good luck.
