Do most female interviewers tend to pick less attractive other female interviewees?
Do you think it's generally true that female interviewers will most likely call back a less attractive/modest looking woman, than an atractive female? And do you believe that attractive female candidates have an advantage when interviewing with male HR?
Any opinions?
I'm asking this question because I noticed that most of the past interviews which I did not pass were with male interviewers and that maybe it is my appearance that is subliminally affecting their decisions, and thus is probably why I have had bad luck in the past 15+ internship interviews I've already had...
I noticed how I seem to have better luck in interviews when the person doing the interviews are female, rather than male...
It definitely plays a role but probably not the main reason you're not getting through.
I have a buddy who has a very unattractive scar on his face that he got this year in an accident. It's really messed with his confidence. He wasn't getting any traction at first and thought it was the scar but it was actually because of his insecurity/awkwardness. After he got over it and started acting like himself again, he started getting offers.
If you're insecure and awkward, as hard as you try to hide it, people will feel it. Its uncomfortable, they don't want to work with somebody like that. Think to yourself, would I like me if I met me?
i'd say an attractive one, because the person who calls back, whose a superior, will have hired someone good-looking, with the implication she's good.
People have strange views on how appearance shapes work performance and attitude. I know a guy who specifically does not hire good looking people (I don't know what this means to him) because he feels that they have unknowingly enjoyed a privilege and won't work as hard as less attractive people who have been running uphill all their lives.
Everything else being equal, I think more people prefer the company of a more attractive person of either sex, but you do pose an interesting question. I asked a few females about your Q, and the consensus was that they would call back the best looking female applicants who were not more attractive than decision maker.
