Does GPA really not matter for SWE?
Title says it all. I'm sure we're all aware that GPA matters a lot for getting to interviews for IB. But how much does it matter for tech? Can I still get decent number of interviews at FAANG-like companies if I have below a 3.5?
Probably depends on school and how low your gpa is. Obviously a 3.3-3.4 at Berkeley would get looks from FAANGs
I don't have anything concrete here but what you hear a lot is that tech is more merit-based. For any SWE job the first interview step is going to be a coding challenge that might be sent out more widely without dinging people on resume alone. You better nail that coding challenge though. However I think a big focal point of the "merit" aspect of tech is more that there aren't "target schools" or specific backgrounds they are looking for-- I still think your GPA and other metrics of academic performance are certainly relevant, but I guess you can prove yourself.
Side note-- why is this forum becoming SWE Oasis recently...
