EOE and Diversity
These past few months I have been applying for internships and I have come across a few internships that are listed as “Equal Opportunity Employers” but ask that only those who belong to a marginalized group apply to them. Meaning that only people of color, women, or veterans are eligible for these internships. By definition, wouldn’t this be the opposite of being an equal opportunity employer? If white males are prohibited from getting these internships, how can these programs claim to be inclusive?
The programs are like that not because the firms want it that way, it is is because the government tells them that they have to exclude white people from the diversity programs. It's all part of the "have more than just white men on Wall Street" thing.
Look, I'm all for helping those who are at a disadvantage get ahead and life and help them get a start on the road to a good career and financial success. But they should not do that at the expense of others, which is what they are doing.
