Equity Sales to IBD?

Hey everyone. I interned at a top BB this past summer (MS/GS) and received a full-time offer for an equity sales role. Really excited for the job and just want to focus on excelling at it, but long-term I recognize I would rather be in a different position.

Ultimately want to end up on the buyside and know that won't be through sales. How is lateralling from an equity sales role to IBD? Is this common? I can imagine to ECM it would be very possible, but more interested in a coverage group (i.e TMT/FIG).

Two major questions: i) assuming bank has strong internal mobility, would you lateral after two years as a fresh analyst in IBD or on a fast-track for asso; and ii) how do you handle telling your team internally? I imagine that would piss off the team a lot tbh especially if you own client relationships by then.

Would love words of advice from anyone that has done / seen this. Imagine it's not too common, but if pulled off could be awesome as i) IBD at top BB would be great for funds and ii) will know dozens of PMs/CIOs on a first name basis by that point on time.
