ER Admin Assistant

I realize that these jobs are glorified secretaries for the most part, but are some lying when they say you will help with gathering research and once in a while brainstorm ideas?

Would this help at all if one had no experience, or should I stick to trying to find something more solid?

depends on the role. my team has had something like three assistants over the years. one of them was a pre-MBA, princeton grad kid who tried to pretend he was an associate. the other two were secretaries who filed paperwork and expense reports and helped manage my boss's travel.

admin assistant sure sounds like secretary work though. these people aren't licensed and they aren't part of the coverage team. and insider trading restrictions means they can't be part of conversations. like if we are discussing how company XYZ did during the quarter, the admin can't be part of that discussion until the note is already published.

"research assistant" is what they usually call the out-of-undergrad types who are integrated into an actual coverage group.

but research is much less formalized than banking. you could probably tailor the role to meet your needs.

we had one admin who was really good at doing stuff like plugging data into our industry models and helping us with the publishing process, which did give her some hands-on time.
