Hi, Do you think if I can still recruit for IB or PE after this internship given my background in finance ? I don't think I will be doing much financial modeling work here but lots of consulting type work. Thanks.

Are you at a target (e.g. Ivey, Queen’s)? If so then there’s FT recruiting in September / October with the MBB and other shops. Though, a lot of the unofficial scouting of prospects can happen in the summer (where the MBBs would ask their summer interns who are good prospects and such).

Whether you’re at a target or not, I would suggest doing some networking ahead of time. You could for example reach out to Celestica folks that are ex-MBB (when you are interning) and grabbing a coffee. See if they have advice and learn more about their experience at MBB (not only to better understand what consulting entails, but talking to more people will allow you to develop better responses when you’re interviewing). From there (if you managed to develop good rapport with them) see if they’re open to connecting you to their former peers at MBB.

You can go for recruiting around the same time as MBB, since IB recruiting happens in Sept / Oct. But that means you'll need to be prepped for both as interviews happen around the same time. Most people do either one or the other because it's a huge time commitment to prep for either consulting or IB and PE (like say with CPPIB). Doing both might spread yourself too thin. That is, unless you feel like you aren't super competitive as a candidate (meaning you feel you might not land a large number of interviews / you're a long shot), in which case then you could just apply to a ton of roles from both sectors and see what sticks because then you're not worrying about focus.

I think you need to think about what you want, and use the next few months to prep, know the industry and network.
