Failed Logistician looking to transition into Banking
Hi All,
I’ve been laid off from my previous two gigs working in logistics for a couple of Fortune 50 companies (think Amazon & Wal Mart) and am looking for a career reboot, namely, pivoting into a finance role in ibanking.
I’ve since applied and have been accepted into a top 30 MBA program and am set to start in the Fall of 2019. At the current moment, I’ve been cold calling banks across my region with hopes of being able to get some hands-on experience as to make the pivot a lot more sensible and to aid my efforts on the recruiting trail come next Fall. So far (two months worth) I’ve gotten few, if any, responses and have gotten radio silence once they’ve seen my prior experience :/
Any ideas and suggestions on how to successful make this transition? Should I be immersing myself and CFA prep or modeling boot camps to demonstrate my commitment to wanting to break in ?
First post here and any and all responses are welcome.
Thanks,
JW
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re presumably unemployed, have no prior IB experience and I assume have a resume gap between job 1 and 2. IB is very unlikely, why did you get laid off, was it a true reduction in force or were you fired? Don’t try and BS the banks because when you fill in FINRA forms you’ll have to give your last ten years of work including gaps.
Fired from the first because my boss said I didn’t meet his expectations.
Fired from the second because my team gave me poor marks for leadership/morale in consecutive months.
Been working for the family business during gaps.
Would aiming for a Top 15 MBA increase chances or breaking in, or will the school’s relative prestige be negligible given my work experience ?
Top 15 is better, but you wouldn’t be very competitive given you’ve been fired twice. Take the top 30 MBA and run with it, but also be introspective being fired twice means there’s an issue particularly if it was for having a bad attitude.
Thank you for the constructive feedback. I have definitely been focusing on the introspective piece especially during the application (essay writing) process to B School.
Thoughts on removing failed work experience and putting the down the family business only ?
If you lie and we find out, we probably will, we run background searches pre-hire you would be dinged and the dishonest would be a huge problem, especially for corporate or investment banking.
