From law to...what?
Hi everyone, I'm using a throwaway account for this:
I am a Canadian who graduated from a Canadian law school last year and will have been working at a business law firm for just over a year when I plan to move. I have thought about taking a break from law for a few years and moving to the USA. I was hoping to get some advice on what types of careers/jobs would be ideal for a lawyer to lateral into? As a lawyer, you do plenty of research, which I think is one of the biggest transferable skills in certain finance sectors, in addition to solid writing and communication skills which I think are prerequisites for going to law school in the first place. I will note that I don't have much litigation practice as my practice is solicitor focused, so appearing in court isn't the type of thing I've done often.
So TL:DR: what type of job can a newly called Canadian lawyer realistically get if wanting to move to the States? Perhaps management consulting due to the similarities of client-facing type roles and advising? And for these jobs, what type of requirements (grades, work experience, ec's) do companies look for?
Isn't this a Visa question as well - you are able to work in the US?
If you graduated from a top Canadian Law School, then probably Investment Banks and Consulting firms already have already completed their recruiting at your school. Best option as of now is to network your tail off with Consultants or Bankers who you still know from College (assuming you went to a top Undergrad) or get an MBA degree to get Investment Banking/Consulting positions. This is the best way to move to the United States. Also make sure you know your "Why" because sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side, but it really isn't. Everything has its tradeoffs.
