Has anyone ever networked with people from conference calls?
I just started an analyst position at a multi-family office PWM firm, and some of my work involves listening in on conference calls that financial institutions hold to discuss markets, performance of their products, etc. I then prepare write-ups on them (most deal with performance of funds and etfs that we invest for our clients). From time to time the VP also holds his own calls with people from Barclays, Fidelity, etc, and I sit in and talk/ take notes as well.
My question is, is it weird if I later on approach these individuals through email or phone, to network with them? For instance, today we talked to an FX trade desk at a BB, and I really wanted to learn more about their ideas/ research on USD/JPY moving forward, as well as to learn more about the person's roles day to day. Has anyone ever done this, and has anyone ever successfully used this approach to learn more about a firm/ network their way into said firm?
Tread lightly if you just started
Be mindful of what your communication implies. People will immediately try to infer what it is that you seek from reaching out, and will tend to conclude that you either want information that you shouldn't have, or are seeking job opportunities.
Definitely tread lightly, even more so if you just started. Perhaps you should wait for an opportunity where you'd be talking one-on-one on a work-related issue before trying to connect. I certainly wouldn't reach out with the sole intention of speaking with them.
Honestly, I'd look for an easier, less risky method of networking.
