headhunter outreach to MM bank analysts?
If I'm at a top MM shop (Baird/Blair/PS/HW/HL), can I expect to receive incoming opportunities (PE) from headhunters?
Heard from a friend at a BB that they've already had some outreach, and wondering if I'm going to get the same at a MM. Obviously not expecting the MF looks, but interested in MM/UMM PE.
Should I be reaching out to headhunters/PE firms myself? I'm worried I'm going to miss the train on PE recruiting just because my bank isn't as prestigious and want to do whatever it takes to make sure I have the chance to recruit. Would be great if anyone from one of the top MM shops could chime in with their experience.
Plenty of guys from those banks get into MM PE (like me), but UMM is a bit of a reach. Best bet is to get in a good relationship with a senior in the sponsors team who can help with getting you on their radar. Plenty of people in MM IB find success by reaching out to college / banking alumni as well. It also won't hurt to message recruiters too. Best of luck!

Yes you’ll see opportunities from them. I worked at one of those firms you mentioned and was in contact with most of the regular HHs when I went through recruiting (on-cycle). Believe they all initiated the contact as well.
Great, this is what I was looking for. Did it require any extra leg work on your part to do on-cycle (as opposed to as if you were at an EB/BB), or were you able to simply sit back and let the HHs come to you and then recruit from there?
I would say any extra leg work that I needed to do was the result of being non-NYC based. My geographic preference was non-NYC, but many of the major HHs will host meet and greets in NYC that I was just unable to attend as the result of my location. Most of the analysts in my office that were focused on NYC were still able to land spots there, it was just more of a hassle for them to travel for superdays vs. analysts already based in NYC.
HHs should typically come to you. I stayed for three years as an analyst and recruited during my second year, so did it a bit differently. Before on-cycle started during my second year, I proactively reached back out to all my HH contacts (who had all reached out to me the year prior) to set up calls. I typically didn't have trouble getting on the phone with them, although did have a few cancellations from some. For any reputable bank, HHs will typically reach out to an analyst that they placed in a prior year to get a facebook or list of contacts for the new analyst class, so that they can reach out once recruiting starts.
