Help analyzing some things from an interview I had

So I had a job interview for a BB graduate trading position in london. The interview was a one on one with the team leader and the position was for a position in her team. The interview actually went well but I got the feeling at the end that she probably does not want to hire me. I got this feeling because 1) she kept reiterating that it's an achievement to have made it so far into the interview process and kept telling me how many cv's they had cut down in the process; and 2) she was a bit vague about when I would find out about whether I got the job or not and she said that human resources should probably respond sometime by wed or thurs or fri the week after. She also asked me if I would like to be considered for hong kong for trading, to which I said yes.

Is it a bad sign that she didn't exactly know when HR would get back to me about the job? I mean, if she wanted to hire me. Wouldn't she be pretty sure about when HR would get back to me? Is it also a bad sign that she asked me if I would like to be considered for hong kong? Does this imply that she doesn't plan on hiring me for her team? Also, is that hong kong thing more of a gentle way to let me down than an actual spot that is actually open?

I know that some people will say that it's too hard to say and that you can only speculate, but I'm hoping someone with experience in this situation may provide some insight into what's actually going on.

Best Response

I'm going to give you the other (bright side)

1) she kept reiterating that it's an achievement to have made it so far into the interview process and kept telling me how many cv's they had cut down in the process; and

She's trying to pull you in. She wants to make the role sound like the best in its class so if you were offered one, you'll take it.

2) she was a bit vague about when I would find out about whether I got the job or not and she said that human resources should probably respond sometime by wed or thurs or fri the week after.

It's always like that. Jobs that I got and did not get, they always brush it off to HR. What did you expect her to say? You're hired on the spot? I don't really understand what this sentence you're trying to string together.

She also asked me if I would like to be considered for hong kong for trading, to which I said yes.

Been asked that too. It's not a bad sign. Maybe she sees you with another group or she wants to know if you're open to other options.

In my opinion, there's no need to stress over it. You're done with your interview so the only thing that you can do right now is write a thank you letter. There's nothing else you can do. Stressing over it will not help you get that job. If anything, look back on your interview and see what you can improve on it. Life is short. Move on, there will be other opportunities.

1) she kept reiterating that it's an achievement to have made it so far into the interview process and kept telling me how many cv's they had cut down in the process
She is not saying she does not want to hire you. She is probably just saying that you made it through the first filter of a lot of candidates and that the odds are still stacked against everyone in this round. It's not you- it's the number of other applicants.
2) she was a bit vague about when I would find out about whether I got the job or not and she said that human resources should probably respond sometime by wed or thurs or fri the week after.
Probably because there are a lot of candidates.

It sounds like whatever happens as a result of this interview, it's probably not about you. So don't get discouraged.

Write a thank you note- try to include something about the interviewer that she mentioned in the interview to try and make yourself memorable. And if you don't get an offer this time around, they might remember you the next time there is an opening.
