How do you do your research ?

Hey all,
so I have a fundamental question. Now this may seems obvious to some though I'm just looking for more insight.

How do you come up with great possibilities to invest?
I understand you could look at market performers and do bottom up or top down analysis. Though I'm talking about small companies coming out with new ideas that are owned by public portfolios.

essentially, how do you find your niche companies that you think you've found.
